A Guide to Getting the Most Out of
Your Hopeful Gifts for Change Catalogue 2017/2018

Christmastime, we celebrate the birth of Jesus and what that means to the world around us. When I reflect on the Christmas story, I’m often reminded of the message given to the humble shepherds living out in the fields: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” (Luke 2:10, NIV)

As the Director of International Partnerships for CBM, I’ve seen firsthand the effects that poverty can have on children and families around the world. But I’ve also seen how lives can be transformed when we partner with local churches and organizations to share God’s love in word and deed.

The CBM Hopeful Gifts for Change catalogue offers meaningful ways to embrace what you believe this Christmas. When you purchase a gift for someone in need, you are declaring that God’s Kingdom has come to give us hope, joy and peace.

I believe that all children should be cared for and loved. I’m excited that this year’s Hopeful Gifts catalogue is featuring after-school care for children of migrant workers in East Asia. This gift provides books and activities for rural children living in low-income areas. It also provides educational and spiritual support, as many of these children often feel neglected.

How will you embrace what you believe this Christmas?

5 Ways to Be a  This Christmas

1. Challenge Yourself

Do you start your mornings in a drive-thru line up waiting to get your coffee fix? When you purchase your daily cup of java, set aside the money it would take to purchase a second cup for someone else. At the end of the month, you’ll be surprised by how much you’ve saved! Consider how you could use this extra money to bless someone less fortunate.

3. Organize a Fundraiser

Encourage your church’s mission group or Sunday School to help others in need this Christmas by hosting a fundraising event. You can hold a Christmas bake sale in November or early December. Find easy recipes that are fun to make together as a group. Wendy Derksen, CBM Field Staff based in Rwanda, suggests her favourite oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe (below). Try using animal cookie cutters, and you can also decorate the bake sale table with a global theme.

2. Spread the Word

Use Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to challenge your friends to give meaningful gifts this year that will truly last. Take a “Champion of Hope” selfie that represents what you would like to purchase from Hopeful Gifts and share it on your social networks. Don’t forget to tag us on Instagram @CanadianBaptistMinistries – we want to see how you’re making a difference.

4. Pray

During your church’s prayer meetings, say a prayer for those in need around the world this Christmas. Then prayerfully consider how your church can show God’s love to those who are broken and hurting.

CBM Field Staff Wendy and Ken Derksen are based in Rwanda.

Gifts for Teachers

Tired of giving your child’s teacher a box of chocolates for Christmas? Skip the long line ups at the mall this year, and purchase a teacher-friendly item from the Hopeful Gifts for Change catalogue instead. Your child’s teacher will be touched that your gift will help impoverished students on her behalf. (She’ll also be thankful to have one less box of chocolates sitting on the edge of her desk.)

See the Children’s Education section of the Hopeful Gifts catalogue for a variety of items that any teacher would love. A school uniform helps remove the barrier to education ($10). School supplies help orphans and vulnerable youth in Africa ($20). Providing school fees for a child creates a better future ($65).

This year, CBM is also offering free Christmas cards that kids can give to their teachers. These special Kids Care Christmas Cards are designed with colourful images that focus on education around the world. Help your child to write a special message or draw a picture for their teacher inside. Your thoughtful gift and personalized card will make a lasting impact on your child’s teacher – as well as a child in need across the globe.
